Take It From a Solitude Local

Posted By: Solitude Mountain, October 16, 2017

Today, Eliassen calls Solitude home. Originally from Minnesota, her choice to live in Big Cottonwood Canyon and ski Solitude is a departure from the norm for freestyle skiers, who typically set up camp in other states and resorts. Most likely it was for the community, powder, and natural features, but we chatted with the local pro to see why.

Discovering Solitude

Posted By: Solitude Mountain, October 16, 2017

The Wasatch Mountains rise sharply above Salt Lake City. Rolling, brushy foothills give way to peaks cloaked in high alpine firs, laden with chutes and open faces beckoning to be skied. Unlike other small ski towns, Salt Lake is a city, home to over one million people. Yet it boasts some of the easiest access for locals and visitors with six ski resorts within a 45-minute drive of the Salt Lake City International Airport. Toss in 500-plus inches of annual snowfall, and you have a powder skiing paradise with plenty of options. Yet somehow Solitude Mountain remains undiscovered, a world-class resort devoid of the crowds.

Solitude’s Family Secret

“Utah’s secret slopes.” This is a term that is used to describe Solitude Mountain, a world-class resort with a base area village, easy access to Salt Lake City, and truckloads of snow. After all, a cocktail or microbrew post-skiing is synonymous with the sport.

Far East in the West

A classic Wasatch blower storm was winding down, dropping over 40 inches in two days as the parting clouds began to mix with glimpses of sun. It hadn’t stopped snowing all winter, just brief windows of clearing that typically accompanied a day of sun sandwiched between storm cycles. I was running on fumes, having not taken a day off in close to a month and in need of something to eat—a good problem to have given the winter’s stellar conditions.

The racks of skis outside Solitude’s on-mountain restaurant, the Roundhouse were packed. Apparently the rumors of the best Himalayan food in Salt Lake City were true. I had spent the morning catching up with friends who were visiting from out of town, lapping knee-deep powder, serendipitously timed with the opening of Evergreen. The conditions were surreal, yet the day wasn’t even half over. So I was looking forward to finally tasting the acclaimed cuisine while I waited for the Highway to Heaven backcountry gate to open.

Bet the House On White

Posted By: Solitude Mountain, October 16, 2017

“The Greatest Snow on Earth®.” The 500-inch annual average snowfall that graces the slopes of the Wasatch Mountains in Utah have long held this claim. It’s a combination of the geography and snowy climate that produces frequent storms, a soft underlying surface, and right-side-up snowfall (meaning the snow starts out wet and dries out as it stacks up).
